Types of Air Chucks
Closed flow
Most air chucks have a closed flow design. This type prevents air from flowing until it is pressed or locked onto the stem. These are often the best choice for air compressors with a reservoir, as the compressor does not have to keep the reservoir full while you are working.
Open flow
Once connected to the air line, open chucks allow a continuous flow of air and are ideal for use with tankless compressors. This type of air chuck is becoming increasingly popular as it is often seen as the most efficient type. Many are designed for use with tyre pressure gauges.
Clip-on and push-on versus screw-on
Air chucks are fixed to the valve stem in several ways. The clip-on and push-on are the most common designs. Pushing a air chuck requires you to push it down onto the stem to start the air supply. The clip-on model works similarly but has a clamping mechanism to hold it in place, thus reducing the risk of air leakage. The third type screws onto the stem. Screwing into place produces an excellent seal, but is considered more of a nuisance than it is worth, given that the clip-on chuck is very reliable.
