Dial Gauge - Overview

A dial gauge, also known as a dial indicator, is a precision mechanical instrument that measures small linear displacements or deviations, typically by a spring-loaded plunger or a lever-arm contact point against an object. It uses a geared mechanism to magnify these small movements and display them as readings on a circular, graduated dial, making it essential for checking flatness, roundness, runout, and for comparing parts in manufacturing and engineering.

Types of Dial Gauge

Plunger dial indicator

Plunger dial indicators are typically heavier and larger than most dial indicators. This type of dial indicator is most suited for repetitive and comparative-based measurements. Plunger dial indicators are also commonly used in machine setups to monitor the differences or changes in the alignment of machine parts and components.

Lever dial indicator

The lever dial indicator is another popular and commonly used dial indicator. This type of indicator is perfect for measuring small measurements such as linear and geometric features on a component. Lever dial indicators are also used to measure the amount of material removed during grinding or milling.

Digital dial indicator

Digital dial indicators feature digital displays that offer much more feasible and faster reading than traditional dial indicators. They offer a precise and advanced digital reading experience with unique features like data output and tolerance settings. Digital dial indicators are more user-friendly and offer enhanced accuracy.

For Workpiece Alignment
Engineers use dial indicators for workpiece alignment in various machines including, but not limited to, milling machines, lathe machines, grinding machines, and EDM.

To Identify Lateral Run-out
Dial gauge indicators find significant application in automotive disc brakes where they are used to check lateral run-out. Engineers then reinstall the disc failing which can cause damaged studs and uneven torque.

For Calibrating Machines
Before the production even begins, dial indicators are used to calibrate the machines in the workshop. This phase is the first one in the manufacturing process used to ensure maximum accuracy in the output.

To Measure Height Difference
Narrow limits and the height difference between them are difficult to measure. This difference is where the role of dial gauge indicators comes in. They can measure such minute height differences with ease.

To Detect Deformations
In the manufacturing process, deformations such as compression and intension are bound to arise. However, it is equally important to identify and eliminate them using dial gauge indicators.

Checking Positional Errors
Dial indicators also find critical applications in detecting positional surface errors such as alignment, squareness, and parallelism.

Detect Geometrical Errors
Accurate geometry is imperative in the manufacturing process. This fact is why dial gauge indicators are used for determining errors in taper, roundness, and ovality.

Components of Dial Gauge

Case

The outer part of the dial gauge.

Lock

Serves to lock the pointer needle in a certain position when reading the measurement results.

Long pointer (long needle)

Indicates the measured value on the scale.

Short pointer (short needle)

Shows the number of rounds made by the long pointer. For each full revolution on the long pointer, the short pointer will highlight the movement by moving one strip.

Scale

Part of the dial gauge that shows the numbers from the measurement results.

Stem

A place for the spindle to move up and down and commonly used by holders to place the dial gauge in position.

Spindle (also called plunger)

Moves up & down which serves as an input to the dial indicator.

Point of contact

The point of interaction between the workpiece and the tool. This section is one of the most important indicators and comes in several types.

FAQ

Q: What is the application of dial gauge?

A: Dial gauges are used for checking flatness of surfaces; parallelism of bar and rods; and detecting small differences if any in linear measurement of identical objects. A dial gauge is also used for measuring concentricity of round objects. These are available in inches as well as in millimetre.

Q: What is .001 on a dial indicator?

A: Most have a measuring range of 1". Resolution: the smallest distance it's able to measure. It appears as the smallest division on the scale. Also called 'Graduation', most dial indicators have a resolution of 0.001", but some are available with a resolution as small as 0.00005".

Q: How many types of dial gauges are there?

A: There are 3 types of dial gauges: Dial indicators in which the spindle is parallel to the dial face. Dial indicator in which the spindle is perpendicular to the dial face. Dial indicators in which the measuring contact member is a lever.

Q: How often should a dial gauge be calibrated?

A: Industrial dial gauges require calibrations multiple times a year to compensate for the mechanical effects of operation. When the gauge probe touches a surface for measurement, it strikes the internal gears in the gauge, rotating the needle on the dial's face.

Q: Are you manufacturer or trading company?

A: We are manufacturer.

Q: What's your best delivery time?

A: Within 15-30 days.

Q: What is the quality control of your product?

A: Follow strictly quality control measures for implementation.

Q: Will your company provide free sample?

A: It depends on which sort of item you want to get. Some can be provided free of charge, however, the client shall assume the shipping fees himself.

Q: Is OEM open to clients?

A: Yes, we can provide both OEM and ODM service.

Q: What is the payment of sample?

A: T/T and Alipay both acceptable.

Q: What is your packing?

A: Yes, our packaging is genuine original packaging. Of course, we can also provide neutral packaging or according to your requirements.
